The CCD (Charge Coupled Device) is the single most expensive component in any digital imaging device. It is a sophisticated chip found in almost all digital still and motion cameras. Why is it so expensive? Just think about the miracle it performs. It mimics reality by digitally reproducing the light waves our eye interprets as color and adjusts for artifacts.

 

CCDs themselves are not sensitive to color. They can detect the differences in light intensity but not the difference in wave frequency that the eye interprets as different colors.

Color information is achieved by filtering the light entering the lens and hitting the CCD. This filtering can be done on a per-chip basis as done in 3CCD cameras or on a single chip according to a per-pixel basis.

 

The most efficient and accurate way to rebuild the color our eye sees in a digital world is to use 3 chips - one chip for red, one for green and one for blue. A beam splitting prism block behind the lens dissects the light into three waves. Each wave is sent to a different CCD through filters of the three primary colors.

 

Each CCD receives the entire image but in different colors. Three chip cameras, like the kinds used by SobeGirl yield the best images. This is because each chip receives the full bandwidth of light making the image processing more accurate. Correspondingly, higher quality cameras usually have three CCDs and are therefore pricier than single CCD capture devices.

 

The cheaper single chip cameras are usually more prevalent in retail stores because the price appeals to a wider range of buyers. My favorite 3CCD recorder is the Sony 900. It runs about $2000. A good single chip recorder runs at around $1200. Big difference if all you want to do is make home movies of your kid getting pizza sauce on his bib. 

 

Most consumers buying a video recorder will be perfectly happy with the single CCD device. As a matter of fact, you might not even find a 3CCD recorder in your local retail outlet. But for Prosumers like myself nothing but a 3 chip recorder will do.

 

This is because there are more artifacts found in images produced by single chip cameras, and the processing of the image is more complex. To create the image, the single chip recorder must separate the RGB colors itself. It does this through an array of color filters placed directly on the chip. Then interpolation is needed and the whole story becomes very technical in nature. Plain and simple, you get what you pay for. When image quality counts and accurate color reproduction is paramount nothing but a 3CCD recorder will do.

 

As a Webmaster you should be asking content providers questions about the equipment they use to produce content. After all you will be spending your hard won money on that content and you want to buy the best. Purchase only pure digital source content made from 3CCD cameras and quiz content providers on their knowledge of the equipment they use before you make a purchase.
