Was the Unibomber correct? How
about that for a tag line? I read his manifesto way back in 1998. It really is a piece of
work. I know he was nuts - blowing up people and all but in his manifesto he did make some
compelling arguments against technology and the effects it has on our lives.
Have you heard about Ccnow.com? Well in case you haven't, they went down last Thursday
January 10th. They were down until the 14th. I use CCnow to process SobeGirl credit card
sales and they usually have thousands in escrow for me at any given time in the month.
When they went down I was stranded with no way to collect funds from SobeGirl content
sales.
CCnow's crash reminded me of the Unibomber's Manifesto, which I read 3 years ago. It
reminded me of the total dependence I and many others like me have on technology. When
that technology fails what do we do? Where do we go? The Unibomber had nothing against the
people he killed. His war was with technology itself. In his own demented way he believed
that by killing those responsible for creating the technology he could halt the impending
doom that he believes is certain if we continue to let technology rule our lives.
I bet that most of you have seen the movie "Matrix" at least once. I have seen
it several times. I have no doubt that the writers of that script read the Manifesto first
and then sat down to pen the movie. Both scripts present a case that makes humans totally
dependent on the technology, which they created. They created the technology to make life
easier, to gain more freedom and pleasure out of life. These reasons for innovating
technology are compelling.
First it is the challenge to do it. Our human nature, probably our DNA instills the will
to make things better. We continue on this path never considering the negative effects
this innovation has on our lives. Take the net for example. I make my living off it. At
first I used it just for email. Cool look at this, I don't need to use the mail anymore.
Now I cannot live without it. What would I do if I no longer had access to it?
In a limited sense that is what happened to me when CCNow went down. I was stranded with
no where to go. Sure I could have a backup system in place and very soon I will. But what
about the other things I use the Internet for such as banking, trading, email, etc. As the
components of the technology we love so much are produced and controlled by a small number
of conglomerates what does the future hold? Ask the Unibomber and he will tell you that in
the future we become slaves of the technology we created. But you can't ask him because he
is rotting in the Club Fed. That's what you get for killing people.
So what am I going to do about all this - absolutely nothing. I am the king of the
hypocrites. I see the problems and I do nothing about them. I even jump headfirst into
them and become one of the problems biggest supporters. I don't suppose that I can predict
the future. I read and read, take the facts and filter them through my brain to come up
with my own conclusions. I cannot compete with the powers that continue technological
innovation. And if I cannot beat them I will join them. This way I will walk into the
future smiling at the freedoms technology offers me and ignoring those that it takes away.
