A miracle in the palm of your Hand
By The Producer
www.sobegirl.com

Just pick it up and marvel at it. A little bigger than a parakeet, the Sony PC9 is truly a miracle. For around 1000 dollars any would be producer can start making his or her own videos using a video recorder that will fit in a shirt pocket. And inconspicuous it is, which leads me to why I was taking this little beauty for a test drive in the first place.

When you choose to buy a new camcorder you usually have a reason to justify the expense. For example, you have a new baby, you are taking a trip or perhaps you are planning to shoot some erotic videos. Whatever the case may be, your application or combination of applications should determine which type of video recorder you want to own.

From the first day of SoBeGirl, my modis operandi was, “remain inconspicuous”. Nobody needs to know shit about what I was up to and I would not have to look over my shoulder for jealous idiots who would undoubtedly try to screw it up for me. My first camera was a Hi-8 Sony, which could be bought from any local electronics store. Going around with it didn’t attract any attention. It would not fit in my shirt pocket but it did not look out of the ordinary either.

When the HI-8 would not cut it anymore, I had a dilemma. Production was moving along and I needed a good Mini-DV camera. I opted for the Sony TRV 900 because it was powerful, packed with features and still inconspicuous. I love my 900 but when I saw the PC9 and read the specs, I wondered if I could actually use something so small to acquire content for SoBeGirl.

Think how disarming it would be for potential models when they see this tiny little camera. They would probably think that with such a dinky little camera, “this guy can’t be very successful. This video can’t go anywhere, so what the hell, I’ll make this video.” Now, suppose the model comes in and sees a big, bulky, professional camera that looks like it costs thousands of dollars. Her thoughts will then be, “wow, this guy must be serious. This shit will be everywhere. I don’t want to do this, or I will ask for more money”.

Little do they know, that the wallet sized Sony PC9 video recorder can produce broadcast quality video with enough information to beam around the world via satellite. To me, The Producer, the power of this little device is awesome. To others, whom don’t understand, it is just a cute little toy. Combine the power it has with the fact that it is ridiculously inconspicuous and you have the beginnings of some classis amateur adult videos.

A short hop over to the Brandsmart USA and 980 dollars later, I am holding this little gem. I read the owners manual and find one feature that is particularly interesting. This video recorder has a touch screen display. The 2.5 inch flip out display, which I use all the time to frame my shots, is a touch screen. And even more incredible, I can use the touch screen and the tip of my finger to adjust the exposure value of the shot. How cool! If for example, there is a bright light in the scene, which is blowing out the video, making hot spots, all I have to do is touch my finger on the display in an area where it is darker and Presto, the exposure adjusts and holds. A very helpful feature. So, I call one of my favorite girls and ask her if she would like to shoot a video with me so I can give the camera a try. Because, let’s face it. I am not going to try it out for the first time on a live shoot and possibly waste my time and money because the content is no good. Further more, I have to get used to holding it and get familiar with the options and where they are. Even though it is only a single ¼ inch CCD without progressive scan, the MPG2 samples I rendered were very good.

Pros: Color reproduction was realistic, boot time was short, and the super steady shot was great.

Cons: well, there are many, but keep in mind this is when I compare it to my TRV 900 and when your application is shooting adult movies. For personal use like weddings, birthday parties, clubbing, or travel, it is hands down the best I have ever used. Mainly because of its small size and powerful features. For example, I took it with me to the juice bar, set it up on the counter and started recording. No one had a clue they were on film. Most people just thought it was a camera capable of taking still pictures.

But for the kind of work SoBeGirl does, it falls short. I compare the problem I have with the PC9 to the same problem I have with my new Nokia Cell phone. The phone is so darn small, I can hardly press the buttons. Talking on it is sort of uncomfortable as only my finger tips hold it to my ear and not my entire palm. My experience from traveling in Japan, taught me that when it comes to electronics, the Japaneese always try to make everything smaller. Whatever it is, they want to make it smaller, whether or not making it smaller actually makes it more functional. Such is the case with the PC9. It is so small that I could hardly get to the zoom slider or the Pause button. This, of course, would have very bad effects on the end product. I tried all sorts of ways to hold the PC9 but never found any one that was comfortable. The touch screen exposure worked well but I found it more effective to do it the hard way by simply controlling the lighting.

I decided to keep the PC9 rather than bringing it back because it’s small size will come in handy when I travel. But for production purposes, my TRV 900 is the video recorder of choice. If you are planning to buy a new camcorder which will be used for personal purposes, then the Sony PC9 will serve you well. Also check out the PC9’s successor, the PC110. It has an intelligent hot shoe allowing you to plug in lights or a microphone, which can be powered from the camera’s on board battery. The hot shoe is a strong feature, which the PC9 is missing. Pound for pound, or should I say, ounce for ounce. The Sony PC9 packs a lot of bang for the buck. And being able to fit it into your pocket will allow you to get unique content from placing it in situations which would fall apart once your subjects saw a big professional device. With this video recorder you will certainly get content that you otherwise would never have been able to acquire. Just remember to get a copy of the ID.
