Video Recorders 101 - Learning Your Way Around
Camcorders
By SobeGirl's Erik
There are so many video recorders to choose from today it can be confusing deciding
exactly which one to purchase. And they all come with such a wide variety of options that
the whole thing requires hours of research prior to the initial decision to buy. Couple
that with the fact that most suitable video recorders cost in excess of $1000 and you have
what most of us would call an important decision.
First lets look at the different video recorder formats available. For about 250 dollars
you can buy an analog 8mm camcorder. Now at 250 dollars you might think, "how can I
go wrong" but that is not the case. The analog recorder will not port video into a
digital format very efficiently. There are analog recorders that can handle the task but
you won't find them at your local electronics store and they won't be 250 dollars. They
will cost more like 2500.
Furthermore, the analog signal does not provide a full screen of horizontal resolution,
which will leave your video streams less then perfectly clear. And the algorithms, which
will be used to compress the data into the digital video stream, will not be optimized
resulting in a larger file size than if the video source was digital. So, if you plan
to stream your video across the Internet then don't buy an analog video recorder. The
price may seem right but you are buying a useless piece of equipment, which will probably
cease to exist in the next few years. As a matter of fact SobeGirl has a few for sale if
there are any takers.
Now let's talk about what you do need. We will start at the bottom and work our way up. No
I don't have stock in Sony and I have no Japanese relatives but I believe that Sony is
making the best video recording devices on the market. They have the most features, best
warranty, good service, and purchasing options available. If you qualify for the Sony
credit card like I did you can buy a recorder with no money down and no payments for a
whole year.
I just love this country!
Want to be really clever? If you buy the recorder at a big chain store, Circuit City
for example, you have 30 days to bring it back if you don't like it. So go out and get a
few good hours of content. I gave you tips on how to do this in part two of this SobeGirl series.
Then you ship the tapes to SobeGirl for editing and rendering of the streams. Lo and
behold your camera just paid for itself because the content you now have is worth more
than the camera is. Bring the thing back if you want and loose nothing.
I suggest you buy a miniDV recorder. The miniDV format offers the most bang for the buck.
It is a high-resolution metal tape format. Tapes can hold from 1 hour to 2 hours of
content which is perfect for the kind of shooting we will do ; ) It is compact and easy to
store and hide. I once got pulled over by this cop. I have what you call a fast black car
with black leather interior so the cop took it upon himself to search my car. When he
found some miniDV tapes he said "what the hell it this?" Without getting
technical and putting you to sleep - the MiniDV format is a universal format and will be
around for the foreseeable future so you cannot go wrong.
You can buy a HI-8 digital camcorder but I don't recommend it. Horizontal resolution will
be lower than the digital camera and the Hi-8 (the 8 stands for 8mm) tapes are twice the
size of the miniDV tapes. Of course that makes the whole recorder bulkier and heavier. At
around 800 dollars you might as well go all digital if you qualify for the Sony charge
card with no payments for a year. Sony makes one HI-8 analog/digital camcorder that works
well but the picture quality is below what SobeGirl customers have come to expect.
In the next article I will write about the CCD. This is a common electronic component used in all
digital-imaging devices. CCD Stands for "Charged Couple Device." It is the
imaging component made of light sensing pixels, which are used in the camera to capture
images. Higher pixel counts usually mean larger images and more detail. It is the single
most expensive component in a video recorder so it is worth some time learning about
it.
